I am in Minnesota too.
I found that 1.5″ was too long in some places so I kept looking until I found a hardware store that had 1.25″. The one I found them at also sold them by weight so it was cheap too.
Why does it need to start at the workbench level instead of the top of the piece to be cut? I have always set the x and y where I want it to start and the z on the top of the piece to be cut. I built mine 36×36 and have just barely 24×24 cutting area. I would recommend making it slightly bigger than 36×36 if you are going for 24×24 work area. I used the wire harness from the shop and with that harness plus the wire from the motors I have a ton of extra so I don’t think you will have a problem.
